Diving (somewhat) deeply into the world of first-date locations, and the so-called no-no list created on social media of places women do not want to go.
This is an opinion post about a freakin’ dating list I keep seeing pop up all over social media this past week.On the flip side, I’m not a baddie with a full social card. I’m not picky, and I can be open-minded. So…there are some things on this list that I personally would not mind as a first date setting. It all depends on how long we’ve been talking, how interested we are in one another, and the time of year.As for a first date, I’m not sure about that. Just because you don’t know what the other person expects. It’s more of a safety issue than it is a so-called “stuck up” thing. Again, murder documentaries. ... What can I say about number eight? Eight has some weight. I’ve been reading a lot of commentary about this list and a lot of it is huffing about nobody wanting to date, or why women don’t deserve to date ever again.Looking back into my 20s, fast food dates were definitely a whole thing because at the time I adored that person. But we had been together for at least a year. I personally am not a white linen tablecloth type of person, but understand the desire to go out to nice places. It’s nice, I’ve been exposed to a lot of it, but it’s not on my list of necessities.
Then after the date, what would you want to see in that person in order to want to go on another date. Then what are the parameters that would need to be met in order to want to have a relationship with someone. Etc.. ... hmmm... this list, right?
It's been mostly Manhattan (where I am) and Brooklyn, but I dated someone for a month and a half who was based in Jersey City. Probably won't do that again, maybe if they live right by a PATH station it's fine, but once you have to take the Light Rail, it's just kind of too much transit time when starting dating someone new. ... When a person takes time to think about qualities they want in a partner, they can date with more intention. Having a “list” of qualities one wants in a partner and relationship can help hold one accountable.I’m also confident that if you have written a list, you have either A) misplaced said list or B) rarely referenced this list. But having a list to refer to as you date can be incredibly valuable, and in my practice, I always advise my clients to write their own lists, and here is why.When you take the time to really think about the qualities or traits you’re looking for in a prospective partner or relationship, it helps you to date with more intention. Having a list helps you to be more thoughtful and strategic throughout your process and also holds you accountable when you begin to stray from the list (which, of course, many people do).If not a physical list, you probably already have a mental list going. But I encourage you to take your time and think a little more deeply—to go beyond the basics. Consider what you would like your future relationship to look and feel like. What do you want your day-to-day life to be like with your future partner?
